Event Details

What is race? Why does it seem to mean different things to different people?

How do I experience race in my own life? How does this shape my interactions with students?

What is the role for white people in talking about race and racism?

This highly interactive workshop will offer a supportive space to reflect about what race means to us, personally and as educators addressing race with students. The session will open with a brief exploration of personal racial histories, followed by an overview of some of the latest research on racial identity formation (including whiteness), unconscious bias, and contemporary realities of racism. Building on this foundation, participants will construct frameworks for talking about race in the classroom. Whether race and racism is a regular topic in your classroom or you've rarely addressed it, you will carry away a new set of tools for facilitating these critical conversations.

Facilitation by children's book writer-illustrator and diversity educator Anne Sibley O’Brien – check out Coloring Between the Lines to learn more about her approach.

A networking dinner will follow the workshop. We hope you will also stay for our free evening program: Books as Bridges : Children’s Literature and Anti-Racism Education.
